On Saturday, 24 May 2003, a public event called "Blessing China: Overcoming Difficult Times with Smiles — A candlelight gathering of foreigners in Zhejiang" was co-hosted by Xihu Tiandi and In Touch magazine. A number of our foreign friends who work and study in Hangzhou, along with their Chinese counterparts, gathered to light thousands of candles at Xihu Tiandi to offer well-wishes and pay tribute to medical personnel fighting the battle against SARS. The event began at two o`clock in the afternoon with numerous Hangzhou`s foreign community arriving to make donations to the courageous medical workers. People from various industries, fields and countries, including the USA, Canada and Germany, offered their blessing in writing on the event billboard. At 7pm, accompanied by a violin, a vast array of candles lit by local people and foreign visitors were set afloat on the surface of Yong Jin Pond to deliver their wishes for good hope. The warm and affectionate atmosphere lasted till nine o`clock in the evening. All the donations received from this event were used to buy books for the children of medical personnel as their June 1st Children`s Day gifts.
